Rane SL4 for Serato

I switched to Serato from M-Audio’s Torq just this past summer 2010.  I was debating over SL1 and SL3.  I had the money so I ended up going with SL3, the newer version.  The 3rd aux input was very appealing plus it had sound improvements and a better design, which took away the need for thru outputs.

Just like any other technology though, the new version comes out as soon as you buy it.  As I was browsing my tweets today, DJ City posted a blog (http://blog.djcity.com/) about the new Rane SL4!  Of course, the sound quality was improved again this time giving the option of a higher sample rate plus adding better isolation to reduce noise interference.  Instead of 2 deck inputs and an aux, there are now 4 deck inputs and an aux!  The box also doubles as a sound card supporting ASIO or core audio but this is more for producers.  What stands out the most to me is that it’s the first interface to have two USB ports allowing two computers to be connected to it simultaneously.  This lets DJs perform together on four turntables using one box or makes transitioning at the clubs MUCH easier, eliminating the  the risk of sound cutouts or having to use a CD.

SL1 is still very effective for a lot of DJs.  I actually barely see the SL3 around which makes me wonder if anyone is going to jump on the SL4.

The SL4 is dropping in April at a projected retail rate of $899.  That’s a grip (probably worth its value) but it’s definitely an investment I won’t be making anytime soon.  Although, Jason does need a new box and Charles needs a box, period.  Haha.
